Walmart and Service Dogs

When talking with other service dog handlers and puppy raisers, the topic of Walmart often comes up. Usually not in a positive way. The only place I have ever been denied access is at Walmart. I have been harassed in there as well. Out of curiosity, I did a Google search for 'walmart service dogs'. The whole first page is nothing but people who have been denied access!!!

Why does Walmart think the rules do not apply to them?

Thats interesting because around here its the opposite, Wal-Mart is the one place I know that my dogs can come into; and I've never had more then the cursory "Is that a service dog?".
That also could be that, we have the law on our side, here in NC.

Does your Wal-Marts not have a sign on the front door saying Service Animals Permitted?

Oh it has a sign alright. And Utah has full access rights for Service dogs in Training as well. I just do not get it! Otherwise, I have never had more than a "is that a service dog", but at Walmart I get the "no dogs!" even after I explain he is a SDiT!!

I've had a problem with only one Wal-mart and the lady walked off mad once I explained it to her. Then once we were leaving a very nice employee asked if we'd been harrassed at all and when we said we had but dealt with it they apologized for their fellow employee. Our Wal-Mart here is very allowing of "service dogs" so far as to allow general "small" dogs in the store...quite obnoxious actually!

Everytime without fail they ask me about my dog. I nicely explain she is legaly allowed, and they let me go. It is a huge pain though.

Yep the only place I have trouble is Costco and Wal-mart. It gets really tiring when I have to explain why my dog is allowed in EVERY single time I go.

Yeah I have had issues with walmart as well. Once I had to pull out Hobbs' ID card (only time I have ever had to) and talk to the manager before they finally let me in! And it was in UTAH where like you said there are full access rights!!

I've probably had the most problems with Wal-Mart as well, I think it may possibly be that they get too many un-allowed pet dogs in there, but I'm not entirely sure.

I went to Sam's club yesterday (owned by Walmart) and without fail the greater lady looked at Sterling, with his jacket on, and said, your dog can't come in here, there are no dogs allowed. I nicely stated that he is a service dog in training, and said that they even have a 'service animals permited' (as if it could be any other way) on the door. It took 5 minutes of explaining and me asking her to call a manager before I was allowed in!
I just don't get it. They have the sign on the door!!!
